ENG - At the initiative of Jean-Luc Vanraes, Minister of External Relations, and in the framework of the cooperation agreement signed in 1997 with the Federal District of Brasil, the Brussels Capital Region takes the opportunity of the international festival Europalia.Brasil to organize an exhibition about the construction of the capital of Brasil, called Building Brasília (Brasília em Construção). The exhibition, with 62 photographs from the Moreira Salles Institute (Instituto Moreira Salles - IMS) collection, will take place between November 17th, 2011 and January 15th, 2012, at BIP (Brussels Info Place), in Brussels, Belgium as part of the Europalia International Arts Festival. The exhibition offers a wide view of the period of Brasilia’s construction, with a special emphasis to the architectural pieces by Brazilian architect Oscar Niemeyer, which were made during that time: the Alvorada Palace, the Presidential Residence; the National Congress Palace, the Ministry of Foreign Relations´ headquarters known as Itamaraty and the Metropolitan Cathedral (Catedral Metropolitana). There are also images of the Núcleo Bandeirante, a neighborhood that was officially created in 1957 to house the millions of workers who were drawn to the city during the years of construction. The architects responsible for the curatorship are Alfredo Britto and Pedro Évora along with IMS curator Heloisa Espada. The exhibition gathers images by Marcel Gautherot (Paris, 1910 – Rio de Janeiro, 1996), Peter Scheier (Glougau, 1908 – Airing, 1979) and Thomaz Farkas (Budapest, 1924 – Sao Paulo, 2011). They are all European that immigrated to Brazil in the 1930´s and 1940´s and became important references in the Brazilian photography scene of the twentieth century.

FR - L’exposition « Building Brasilia » regroupe 62 photographies émanant de la collection de l’Institut Moreira Salles (Instituto Moreira Salles - IMS). Elle se déroulera du 17 novembre 2011 au 15 janvier 2012 au BIP (Brussels Info Place), dans le cadre du Festival international des Arts Europalia. L’exposition offrira un bel angle de vue sur la période couvrant la construction de Brasilia et mettra particulièrement en exergue les œuvres architecturales, érigées à cette même époque, fruits du génie d’Oscar Niemeyer, architecte brésilien : le palais Alvorada, la Résidence présidentielle, le Congrès national, les Quartiers généraux du Ministère des affaires étrangères, mieux connus sous le nom d’Itamaraty et la Cathédrale métropolitaine (Catedral Metropolitana). Vous découvrirez également des images de Núcleo Bandeirante, la ville voisine qui fut officiellement créée en 1957 pour héberger les millions de travailleurs ayant mis le cap sur Brasilia durant les années de sa construction. Les architectes commissaires de l’exposition sont Alfredo Britto et Pedro Évora ; ils sont accompagnés dans leur mission par Heloisa Espada, conservatrice d’IMS. L’exposition rassemble des images de Marcel Gautherot (Paris, 1910 – Rio de Janeiro, 1996), Peter Scheier (Glougau, 1908 – Airing, 1979) et Thomaz Farkas (Budapest, 1924 – Sao Paulo, 2011).
